The Mcanns - Actual 'News'.

by Foxwriter @ 2008-07-21 - 15:02:21

Previous hopes about the Mcann case have finally come to fruition.

1. Portugese Policias have finally admitted defeat and pulled the investigation into the girl's disappearance and at the same time lifted the official status of 'arguidos' from the parents.

2. The first anniversary of the disappearance has passed.

3. The press now have lots of other topice for their readers to absorb.

4. The mystery may join the thousands of others, equally deserving but buried under this avalanche of middle class single-issue reporting.

4. I may be able to buy a newspaper without some mention of the case arousing my ire. (Not a pretty sight).

5. Foxwriter can now go and find other, less controversial topics. And people can stop sticking pins in his effigy.

(Have you ever had a sore effigy madam? Not pleasant I can assure you).

Are we allowed to say how bloody disgusting it is not to take your children to the restaurant with you like civilised people yet?

A tad soon if you want to escape the bruises I received for daring to suggest in a similar vein.

Pins in your effigy notwithstanding, I am sure most people share your satisfaction that the Portuguese police and Robert Murat have between them stopped the worst of this circus.

I am very glad to hear you say that, I was beginning to think I was some sort of pariah.

'Circus' sums it up very well.

Point-scoring aside, one little child, one of many, is still missing and this case does keep awareness of this dark facet of human nature alive. I think this is no bad thing. It is an uncomfortable feature of human nature, nevertheless it is there. It makes us uncomfortable and we are glad to shove it under a carpet when we can.

It is also sad to realize that the case was going nowhere and little or nothing was being actively done out of the local domain, as far as we know, once arguido status was declared on any suspect.

It is easy to point fingers and moralize; there but for the grace of... could be a mantra for an awful lot of people. The Mcann's will live with the issue all their lives, will probably have to explain this element to their twins at some stage. Rationalising, accusing and excusing is not for me, it is not my role; it is theirs if they choose to take that route.

There has been a media circus, which in part has educated people into the way other countries deal with criminal and other investigations.

Meantime, a little child remains on the missing list, along with many others who may never be found.

Thought provoking comments, thank you.

Unfortunaately, when a very small item of further news arrives the media has the horrible habit of dishing out once again nearly all that has been presented time and time again.

Yes, we can take so much but not to such an extreme.

Well said, thank you.

My 'arguments' were not with the subject matter or indeed with the simple fact that it is a bloody awful situation for the family and their friends.

More with the way the media have willingly colluded with a very astute and manipulative middle class coterie to decide, on our behalf, what is and what is not news of 'national importance', to the exclusion of other equally deserving cases.

If the Portugese police did nothing much as suspected it is dispicable and they should be sued.
I myself do not feel enough was done to find little maddie the port should have been closed emediately that little girl went missing until they had combed the place to be sure she was not still there, and watch should have been kept on anybody leaving, right away.

From what I can gather from a 'source' (i.e. garrulous relative) at one of the dailies the Portugese Policias were as hard-working and dedicated in the investigation as any in Europe however the media circus and heavy-handed approach of the Mcanns 'advisers' hindered rather than helped the investigations. Plus the Policias did not have the technological resources of the Brits which is why our cops were assisting.

As regards restrictions on travel etc. I think I am right in saying there were several disappearances of children in Britain, France and other EU countries at the time as well as 2 others in Portugal. I don't believe it was feasible to shut Europe!

However, thanks for your comments. I appreciate you taking the time.

I see, right, you must know more than i do about it, i just wish more could be done to stop this kind of thing happening.

'More done to prevent something similar in the future'.

On that I think, we are all in agreement.

0k maybe the mccans should have done things they did not but i think they have suffered enough and paid a heavy price.
